Underbelly – Australian for Best Drama You’ve Never Heard Of

It’s likely you haven’t heard of Underbelly unless you reside in Australia, or are a close friend of Suggest A Show contributor and vocal Underbelly proponent TC.  And based on an intense analytic investigation into Suggest a Show traffic, that means almost all of you haven’t heard of Underbelly.  Which is a shame, because according to our results it’s a show similar to dramatic powerhouses The Sopranos, Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy, and Boardwalk Empire.  Everybody always wants more of The Sopranos, and trust me, Underbelly delivers a deep mafia story with a remarkable amount of sex, drugs, violence, and use of the word ‘mate’.

And the best part?  It’s based on a true story.  So true, that the Victorian Supreme Court issued an injunction to stop the broadcast of the show in the state to  ensure that the actual upcoming criminal trials were conducted without bias.  Of course, this move probably only increased the interest in the series, and eventually an edited version was broadcast in Victoria.

Each season of Underbelly tackles a different time period in the history of Australian organized crime with a fresh cast of characters each year, so a 13 episode investment will give a full story arc.  I realize Australian TV is not the first place people go for a gritty new drama, but take my word, and the impressive list of similar shows to heart and give season one a shot.
