The Different Types of Hospice Care: Which One Is Right for Your Family?

Brandie Fuller June 26, 2026 3 minutes read

When a doctor first mentions hospice, most families don’t realize there’s more than one way to receive it. Hospice isn’t a single, fixed service — it’s a flexible range of care options designed to meet patients exactly where they are, whether that’s at home, in a hospital, or in a skilled nursing facility. Understanding the different levels of care can make it much easier to choose the right fit for your loved one, and to feel confident they’re getting exactly the support they need at every stage of their journey.

Finding the Right Level of Care for Your Loved One

Every patient’s needs are different, and hospice care is designed to flex around them rather than the other way around. Here’s a closer look at the main types of care available, and when each one tends to come into play.

Most patients begin with routine home care, the most common form of hospice. This involves regular visits from a nurse, home health aide, social worker, and chaplain, all coordinated around your loved one’s comfort and symptoms while they remain in the place they feel safest — their own home.

When symptoms become harder to manage, continuous home care steps in. This is around-the-clock nursing support, typically used short-term during a medical crisis, to bring pain or other symptoms back under control without requiring a hospital stay.

Some patients reach a point where their symptoms simply can’t be managed safely at home. In these cases, inpatient hospice care in San Diego provides short-term, facility-based treatment until the patient stabilizes enough to return home or to a lower level of care.

Caregiving is demanding, and even the most devoted family member needs rest. Respite care offers temporary relief, allowing the patient to stay in a contracted facility for a short period while their primary caregiver recharges, travels, or simply takes a breath.

For patients whose prognosis extends well beyond the initial six-month window, long-term hospice care provides continued support for as long as it’s medically appropriate, with regular reassessments to make sure the care plan still fits.

And for patients already living in a nursing home, assisted living community, or hospital, hospice services can be brought directly to them, layered on top of the care they’re already receiving, rather than requiring a move.

There’s no single ‘right’ type of hospice care — only the type that’s right for your loved one, right now. Needs can shift over the course of an illness, and a good hospice team will reassess and adjust the care plan as those needs change. If you’re trying to figure out which option makes sense for your family, the team at Blue Monarch Hospice is happy to walk you through each one and help you find the path that brings the most comfort and peace.
