Open vs. Enclosed Transport: Which One Is Right for Your Vehicle?

Brandie Fuller July 15, 2026 2 minutes read

When you’re arranging vehicle transport, one decision comes up almost every time: should you choose open or enclosed transport? Both options get your vehicle safely from point A to point B, but they go about it very differently, and the right choice depends on more than just price.

Understanding what each option actually offers, and who it’s really built for, makes the decision much easier before you request a quote.

Comparing Open and Enclosed Transport

Open transport is the option most people picture when they think of car shipping. Vehicles are loaded onto a multi-level trailer, the same kind you’ve probably passed on the highway, and hauled alongside several other cars. It’s the industry standard because it’s efficient, widely available, and the most budget-friendly option for most shipments. For daily drivers and typical family vehicles, the light exposure to weather and road spray rarely causes any real concern.

Enclosed transport, on the other hand, uses a fully covered trailer that shields vehicles from weather, road debris, and the general wear of highway travel. Because these trailers typically carry fewer vehicles at a time, and require more specialized equipment and experienced drivers, enclosed transport comes at a higher price point than open transport.

Enclosed transport tends to make the most sense for classic cars, exotic and luxury vehicles, low-mileage collector cars, or any vehicle where even minor cosmetic risk isn’t worth taking. It’s also a common choice for brand-new vehicles being delivered to a dealership, or for long routes that pass through harsh weather conditions like heavy rain, snow, or extreme heat.

For everyday vehicles, open transport is usually the more practical choice. It’s readily available, keeps costs down, and is more than sufficient for standard relocations, seasonal moves, or online vehicle purchases where the car isn’t a high-value or rare model. Most insured, replaceable vehicles travel this way without any issue.

Conclusion

There’s no single right answer, only the right answer for your specific vehicle, budget, and route. If your car is replaceable and insured for everyday use, open transport gets the job done reliably. If it’s rare, valuable, or irreplaceable, the extra protection of enclosed transport is usually worth it. At Zweber Auto Transport, our car transport services include both options, explained honestly, so you can choose with confidence instead of guesswork.
