LTL vs. FTL: Which Freight Transportation Solution Is Right for Your Shipment?

Brandie Fuller July 31, 2026 2 minutes read

Not every shipment calls for the same solution, and one of the most common decisions shippers face is whether to book less-than-truckload (LTL) or full truckload (FTL) freight. Choosing incorrectly can mean paying premium truckload rates for a partial load, or risking longer transit times and extra handling when your freight actually needs the space and simplicity of a dedicated trailer. Understanding how these two methods differ — and which factors should tip the decision one way or the other — helps you ship smarter every time.

Key Differences Between LTL and FTL Shipping

LTL shipping consolidates freight from multiple shippers onto a single trailer, so you only pay for the space your pallets actually occupy. It’s the natural fit for shipments under roughly 15,000 pounds or less than a full trailer’s worth of space, and it typically comes with more affordable per-pallet pricing since costs are shared across several customers on the same route.

FTL shipping, on the other hand, dedicates an entire trailer to a single shipment from pickup to delivery. There’s no consolidation, no additional stops, and no freight changing hands at intermediate terminals — which means faster transit times and less handling risk. FTL tends to make more sense once your freight approaches or exceeds a full trailer’s capacity, or when the nature of the goods calls for minimal handling.

Sometimes the LTL-versus-FTL decision gets overridden entirely by the calendar. When a shipment absolutely cannot wait for the next available truckload slot, expedited freight bypasses the usual scheduling and consolidation process to get freight moving immediately.

Deciding between LTL and FTL isn’t always straightforward, especially as shipment sizes fall in the gray area between the two. An experienced freight partner can walk you through the trade-offs for your specific freight, budget, and timeline, rather than defaulting to whichever mode is easiest to book.

Conclusion

There’s no universally “better” option between LTL and FTL — only the option that’s better for the shipment in front of you. Weigh your freight volume, timeline, and tolerance for handling before defaulting to habit, and don’t hesitate to consult a transportation partner who can help you find the right fit shipment by shipment. Making the right call up front saves you money and prevents avoidable delays down the line.
