For decades, going out for a drink meant one thing: alcohol. But that’s changing fast. Across the country, more people are choosing to skip the hangover, the empty calories, and the next-day fog in favor of something that still delivers connection and relaxation — kava.
It’s why we designed our lounge in Fayetteville, NC to feel just as social as any traditional bar.
Whether you’re sober-curious, actively cutting back, or just looking for a new way to unwind, kava is proving that a great night out doesn’t have to start with a drink.
What Makes Kava Different From Alcohol
Kava comes from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, traditionally used across the South Pacific for centuries as a social and ceremonial drink. Unlike alcohol, kava doesn’t impair judgment, slur your speech, or leave you nursing a hangover the next morning. Instead, it works with your body’s natural relaxation response — easing tension, quieting anxious thoughts, and creating a sense of calm sociability without clouding your mind.
That distinction matters more than ever. A growing number of people are rethinking their relationship with alcohol, whether for health reasons, personal growth, or simply because they’re tired of losing a day to recovery. Kava fills that gap well: it’s social, it’s flavorful, and it’s shared the same way a round of drinks would be — clinked shells instead of clinked glasses, community instead of a hangover.
The ritual itself is part of the appeal. Kava is traditionally served in a shell, often accompanied by a shared “bula” — a call-and-response cheers that turns a simple drink into a communal moment. That sense of ceremony, paired with the mellow, grounding effects of kavalactones (the active compounds in kava root), gives people the connection of a night out without the downsides that come with alcohol.
Choosing kava over alcohol isn’t about giving something up — it’s about gaining a better night out. No hangover, no regret, just genuine connection and calm. If you’re curious what a sober night out actually feels like, there’s really only one way to find out: come pull up a shell and experience it for yourself.
