How to Choose the Right Feed for Healthy, Productive Livestock

Brandie Fuller September 28, 2026 3 minutes read

Every farmer knows that what goes into the feed trough shows up everywhere else: in growth rates, milk and egg production, coat condition, and overall herd health. Yet with so many bags, blends, and formulas on the shelf, choosing the right feed can feel overwhelming. The good news is that a few simple principles make the decision much clearer. By focusing on your animals’ species, life stage, and daily workload, you can build a feeding program that keeps livestock healthy and productive all year long.

What to Consider Before You Buy Your Next Bag of Feed

Start with the basics: every species has its own nutritional needs. Cattle, sheep, and goats are ruminants that rely on forage and fiber, while pigs and poultry need more concentrated rations to support fast growth. Horses fall somewhere in between, with sensitive digestive systems that do best on consistent, high-quality feeds. Using a formula designed for a different animal can lead to deficiencies or even toxicity, so always match the feed to the species listed on the label.

Next, think about life stage. Young, growing animals need more protein to build muscle and bone, while mature animals often need a maintenance ration that holds condition without adding excess weight. Pregnant and nursing females have higher energy and mineral requirements, and laying hens need extra calcium for strong eggshells. For weaned calves, look for beef cattle feed in Shippensburg, PA that supports steady frame and muscle development without pushing them too fast.

Workload and production goals matter too. A dairy cow at peak lactation, a horse in regular work, or a hog on its way to market weight will burn through far more energy than an animal at rest. Read the guaranteed analysis on the tag, paying attention to protein, fat, and fiber levels, and compare those numbers to what your animals actually do each day.

Finally, don’t overlook quality and storage. Fresh feed should smell clean and look free of mold, dust, and clumps. Store bags off the ground in a cool, dry place, keep them sealed against rodents, and buy in amounts you can use within a few weeks. When you do switch feeds, make the change gradually over seven to ten days to avoid digestive upset.

Choosing the right feed doesn’t have to be complicated. When you match each ration to your animals’ species, life stage, and workload, and pair it with good storage habits, you set your livestock up for steady growth, strong production, and fewer health problems. Take a few minutes to review your current feeding program this season. A small adjustment today can pay off in healthier animals and a more productive farm for years to come.
